Local archives

We hold records that tell the story of over 600 years of Dumfries and Galloway's history. These include official records and those of individuals, families, businesses and institutions.

One of the most popular uses of our archives is for family history and genealogy research. There is a wealth of information available in Dumfries and Galloway to help you find out more about your family's history and trace your ancestors.

We hold three major groups of records:

  • Dumfries and Galloway Council and its predecessors, from 1425 onwards
  • Dumfries and Galloway Health Board and its predecessors, from 1775 onwards
  • Gifts and deposits, from 1418 onwards

Visiting the archives

Anyone can visit the local archives for free.

Wednesday

Morning - 9.30am to 1pm
Afternoon - 2pm to 6.30pm

Thursday

Morning - 9.30am to 1pm
Afternoon - 2pm to 5pm

Friday

Morning - 9.30am to 1pm
Afternoon - 2pm to 5pm

Saturday
(first in every month)

10am to 3pm

We'd recommend contacting us 24 hours before you visit so we can make sure that the records are available to view, particularly if there are specific records you want to see:

Our staff will help you to handle the records appropriately and to interpret and read handwriting if needed. Pens and paper are also provided for taking notes.

Help with your research

Staff will be able to help you with some basic research work during your visit but we also provide a full research service. Our researcher can help with more detailed or extensive research for a fee of £31.50 per hour.

Book a consultation with the researcher to talk about your research and get support searching records. We can also provide reports and photocopies of any relevant records or transcriptions through our written research service if you are unable to visit us. There may be some additional charges for postage and copies if necessary.
